If you are just replacing an old range hood you are going to need a few simple tools to do the job. You will need a screwdriver, a pencil, some wire nuts and a circuit tester. All the other hardware you will need to install the range hood should come in the box with the new hood.
The very first thing you need to do before any other step is to turn off the power to the old hood at the circuit breaker to make sure you do not get shocked. Remove the old range hood by removing the screws that were used to hold it to the bottom of your kitchen cabinets and slowly lower down until you can reach the wires that supply it power.
Disconnect the power wires by unscrewing the wire nuts and separating the wires. At this point you should be able to completely remove the old range hood and take it away for disposal. Assuming that you measured carefully and got a brand new stainless range hood that is the right size, installation should be very quick and easy.
Many of the new stainless range hoods are designed to accommodate both rear and top venting so you can use the same unit for either by simply moving a plate to cover the unused vent hole. So make sure that you set the cover to the right direction before proceeding. Here it might be helpful to have a second pair of hands to hold the hood up while you reconnect the wires, make sure that you match the colors properly and tighten the wire nuts securely.
All that is left at this point is to use the provided screws to hold your new stainless range hood in place and you are done. Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker and enjoy the new range hood that you installed yourself.
